Richard Ricci, Head Coach and General Manager of the St. Michael’s Buzzers, announced on Saturday that the team has acquired defenseman Matthew Zanardo from the Vaughan Vipers.
“I’m familiar with Matt as he played for one of my summer teams a few years back,” said Ricci. “He brings size and range to the back end along with an element of toughness and physicality. He is a quality kid who grew up with blue in his blood, I expect him to add a great deal to our team on and off the ice."
Zanardo, a 1992 born player who graduated from St. Michael’s College School in June, will start his second season of Junior A hockey this coming fall and will look to add a solid, stay-at-home, physical presence to the Buzzers’ defence corps. At 6-6 and 220 pounds, the Richmond Hill, Ontario native is biggest player on the Buzzers’ roster and is among the biggest players in the OJHL.
In forty six games with the Vaughan Vipers in 2009/2010, Zanardo registered two goals and seven assists while posting seventy three penalty minutes.
Meanwhile, in a separate transaction, the Buzzers dealt Dan Cameron to the Junior B London Nationals of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. In one season with the Buzzers, Cameron posted eleven goals and ten assists in fifty games.
